Episode Highlights:

  • It’s incredibly common for those who feel stuck to feel unworthy of what they actually want

    • The world is constantly telling all of us to suck it up and move forward, but these pain points must be addressed

    • Women have a tendency to put other people’s needs before their own, something that Sheila fell victim to

  • Dedicate a lot of energy and effort towards self-advocacy so that you know you’re own worth

    • Understand your market worth and how much your expertise is worth to your employer

    • It is sometimes difficult to be your own advocate because no one wants to seem selfish or needy

    • Think about the times that you have advocated for others in their own lives

    • Women fare better when advocating for other people according to research

  • Identify your pain points and then make the decision that you will not tolerate them anymore

    • Human beings are terrified of losing something that they already have to the point that they don’t seek something better

    • Get specific about what needs to change in your life and career

    • Boredom is a sign that something needs to change and acts as a beacon towards what needs to change

    • Define where your line in the sand is by writing out your needs and wants

  • Treat potential change like a science experiment with hypotheses and implementation

  • Try your best to understand what’s important to the person or people that you are approaching about potential changes

    • Be considerate of the time of the day or month or year and what that time is like for the other person

    • Keep your approach positive and lead with your why that benefits not only you but benefits everyone

    • Make an effort to be clear about what it is that you want and avoid any vague requests

    • Don’t limit yourself to just one option, so be prepared to present other choices if your best-case is denied

3 Key Points:

  1. It’s important to focus on why you are worthy of getting unstuck so that when it’s time to make a move, you truly believe in yourself.

  2. Take the time to write out your paint points, your wants, and your needs so you can identify your line in the sand.

  3. Building relationships in a healthy and honest manner helps those seeking change to be strategic in who and how they are asking.
